The Dining Hall
The College Dining Hall is at the heart of musical performance at the College. The Dining Hall is home to the Fazioli 278 Concert Grand Piano and is where the majority of concerts take place.
The acoustics of the room are extremely flattering for chamber music and its size, in combination with the wood flooring and the large piano make for an intimate concert experience for up to 190 people, which is unparalleled in Perth.
When concerts aren’t taking place, the hall is reset with tables and chairs and to feed over 200 residents three meals a day.
The College Chapel is home to many aspects of religious and musical life.
The Chapel is acoustically suited to choral music, early music and string ensembles. It is used regularly as a rehearsal space and concert venue and is the home of the Early Music Ensemble of St George’s College. The chapel is also home to the Winthrop Singers, a UWA choral group who perform the evensong service on Thursday evenings.
The Chapel houses the Jillian Belbin Memorial Harpsichord, the College Organ, the UWA School of Music’s Chamber Organ and a Yamaha upright piano for rehearsals.
It is unlikely that the quadrangle was ever intended as an outdoor performance space when first designed, but as luck would have it, it provides the College with a remarkably resonant and intimate setting for outdoor concerts.
The space is versatile and can be used in a number of configurations. The College’s annual Christmas in the Quad concert takes place here with a symphony orchestra. 2016’s Christmas in the Quad welcomed over 2500 guests.
The Music Room
The John Inverarity Music Room is located under the kitchen/servery area and can be accessed via the laneway between the kitchen area and the dining hall. The Music Room contains a Kawai RX-2 baby grand piano. The room is sound insulated and available for residents to rehearse 24 hours a day. This room is the primary rehearsal space for the Chamber Orchestra of St George's College, the Newby Blues and the Mockingbirds.
The Music Room also functions as a green room/holding area for performers before performing in the Dining Hall or Quadrangle.
